The photography I have submitted on this portfolio are mostly from my recent travels in Amsterdam and Cambodia. I mostly wanted to focus and represent the documentary photography / photojournalism / social documentary photography genre as this is the career path I would love to follow. I believe the power of visual journalism inspires and shapes people.
Whilst traveling in Cambodia, I loved interacting with the locals and the chaotic markets. However, I would have loved to photograph more powerful images such as the on-going situations within the government, or in the community, as I read in the local newspapers every morning. I hope within my course I can gradually learn more about how to capture these personal moments without being obtrusive of the laws or the community, and develop myself into a more confident person.
Photography has always been a big part of my life, and although I regret not previously studying it, I believe that with enough hard work and passion I'll be ready to put in all my efforts and energy to studying photography at a much higher level.
In mid April I will be living in Chiang Mai for four months, as part of a community based project. This project involves me working alongside two non government, non profit organisations, consisting of Burmese refugees, hill tribe people, MSM and HIV/AIDS outreach education program, single mothers empowerment, and street children. I will be supplying the women, men, and children with disposable cameras in which I will teach them how to use them and allow them to enjoy and experience the fun of photography, an opportunity which may not be available to them. The photos will be printed out each week, copied, and talked about. My mission for the project is to promote expression and cultivate the creativity that lies in each individual, with the photographs then being shown at an exhibition after fund raising.
